A Brazilian physician Claudio Gil Araujo has developed a small test to find out how many years left you have to life. The basis to this test is the fact that older patients have problems with balance and strength; like standing up picking up items from the floor. Since these skills are special important for accidents he developed a test to measure this aspect. Partly to motivate the patients to start reactivating themselves. The test is simple and does not require any tools since it is basically to sit and rice up. He tested 2000 persons in the age group 51 to 80 years of age.
The test
Stand upright without using any leverage. Then carefully squat into a cross-legged sitting position. Then when you are comfortable you try to stand back up from the sitting position without using any leverage.
Scoring of the test
The total maximum score in the test is 10 (5 points for sitting, 5 points for standing back up). If you use some leverage to aid your balance subtract one point. If you lose your balance or become clumsy you lose ½ point every time.
Analysis of the test score
- Valid only for persons above 50 years of age
- Less than 8 points: Likely to die within 6 years.
- Less than 3 points: 500% more likely to die within 6 years
- For evert point better 21% reduction in mortality
