Most of us remember the terrible thunder last weeks. Here you see a photo from the 10th of august 2015 taken from the ISS space station. On the photo you might observe strong (!) lightning flashes in thunderstorms over Mexico. The most remarkable are the bright red and purple streamers that we observe on the photos extending high into the atmosphere.
This is several clusters of red tendrils going upwards from the lighting flash; up to 90 km into the atmosphere. This strongest light might be observed around altitudes of 65-75 km. This phenomenon do not last longer than 3-10 milliseconds.
